Black Hawk

Everyone wants to know exactly how the take-out-bin-Laden-operation went down. Part of what we know for sure is that badass Navy SEALs did the shooting, and were carried to the site by another elite team – the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, or SOAR (aka the “Night Stalkers”).
The bird of choice appears to have been specially modified MH-60 Black Hawk helicopters. The Night Stalkers are called upon for missions that involve direct assault, reconnaissance, or the insertion/extraction of special forces. They predominantly fly four helicopters: The MH-47E/G Chinook, MH-60L DAP, A/MH-6 Little Bird, and the MH-60K/L/M Black Hawk.
The MH-60K Black Hawk is a beast. It carries 11 fully equipped soldiers (or up to 10,000kg), travels at 300km/h and, thanks to its 870-litre fuel tanks, can fly over 1200km without refuelling – and it’s able to do so in all weather conditions. As if all that wasn’t enough, the MH-60K is also capable of refuelling in the air.
The MH-60K packs some serious heat with a variety of options to choose from – say, two M134 miniguns today? Perhaps an M230 30mm chain gun? How bout trying a GAU-19 gatling gun?  Black Hawk

Heavy Smokers at Risk for Deadly Kidney Cancer

Smoking is linked to heart disease, stroke and in the case of cancer, begins in the lung where it is inhaled.
Dr. Thomas Polascik of Duke University's Cancer Institute says the smoke travels through the lungs, the bloodstream and makes its way eventually to the kidneys, where tumors can grow quite large before they are detected.
"Unless a patient has some sort of pain or perhaps blood in the urine, it may not come to their attention," Dr. Polascik stated.
Often the patient comes into the hospital emergency room with abdominal pain or indigestion, and an imaging device like the MRI or CT scan identifies the tumor.
Previous research had already established the connection between tobacco use and kidney cancer, but the scientists at Duke University studied the medical records of more than 800 patients who had undergone surgery and found something more serious: the onset of advanced kidney cancer.
Dr. Polascik says the kidney cancer patients were divided into three groups, current and former smokers and those who never smoked.  Their risk of advanced kidney cancer was based on two factors, how much they smoked every day and over how long a period of time.

Obama Will Not Release bin Laden Death Photo

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said the president made the decision not to release the photos of Osama bin Laden’s body for several reasons.
Carney read excerpts from the transcript of an interview Mr. Obama gave to CBS television earlier Wednesday.  According to Carney, the president said he is concerned that making the gruesome images public could damage U.S. national security.  "It is important for us to make sure that very graphic photos of somebody who was shot in the head are not floating around as an incitement to additional violence or as a propaganda tool.  That is not who we are.  We do not trot out this stuff as trophies," he said.
Carney said the president told the interviewer that there is no doubt among al-Qaida members that bin Laden is dead.  The White House spokesman quoted Mr. Obama as saying, "You will not see Osama bin Laden walking on this Earth again."
Carney told reporters that the president has held his position on the issue very firmly, and that Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton agreed with his decision to not to disclose the pictures.
But CIA Director Leon Panetta, whom Mr. Obama has chosen to be the next defense secretary, said publicly, several times before the decision was announced, that the photographs should be released.
Whether the president should make the pictures public also caused some disagreement on Capitol Hill.

Women Jockeys Keep Up with the Men

It was the first of ten races at Pimlico Race Course recently, and 22 year-old Stephanie Korger and her horse took the lead early on, crossing the finish line first.
"She actually worked really good today. She did everything that I asked her to and very cooperative for the win," Korger said of the horse she rode.
Korger's horse was trained by Dane Kobiskie. "Stephanie, as a rider, to me is just a very smooth rider," Kobiske said.
Korger says there’s nothing she’d rather do than be a jockey. "It is an absolute exhilarating rush.  I mean there’s no feeling like it.  When those gates open, I mean there’s nothing else in the world that you can compare with," she said.
She's the top apprentice rider at Pimlico, where the prestigious Preakness race is held three weeks after the Kentucky Derby.  When her year- long apprenticeship is finished, she will become a professional rider or journeyman.
A man named Walt comes regularly to the track to bet on the horses. He says the women jockeys keep up with the men.  "Women riders have a different touch, generally, than male riders, in my opinion in that they tend to be more patient," Walt said.  Women Jockeys Keep Up with the Men

Pakistan look to finish strong against WIndies

PROVIDENCE: Pakistan will be looking to give unshakeable proof that the West Indies were fortunate to gain a victory in their One-day International series, when the final match is contested today at the Guyana National Stadium.
The Pakistanis were upstaged by rain and a blistering innings from Lendl Simmons to lose the previous match last Monday at Kensington Oval by one run under the Duckworth-Lewis Method.
The visitors have an unbeatable 3-1 lead in the series, following victories in the first three matches, but they will want to sign-off with a strong performance to knock West Indies back down a few notches, particularly with the two-Test series looming.
West Indies Darren Sammy was relieved to get a victory over a Test-playing nation other than Bangladesh for the first time in two years, but he is looking forward to the final match, and hoped there are no interruptions to prove that the hosts are the genuine article.    Pakistan look to finish strong against WIndies

katrina kaif

Katrina stated that she believes that she was never the ‘next big thing’. “It was more a sort of ‘Okay, she was good in this film, she danced better in this film, and this was where she showed her range,” she added.
Born to an English mother and Kashmiri Indian father, she travelled around the world with her mother and seven siblings, before ending up in London. “I would look around a new city and crave a big house and financial security. Moving around and learning to deal with new people, it makes you internalise your thoughts.”
Her close friend Ayan Mukerji, director of ‘Wake Up Sid’, says there’s a contradiction to Kaif, “She has this energy. It makes her so lovable on celluloid, but I don’t think many people see the real Katrina.”
When Kaif first moved to India in the early 2000s, she got a few modelling jobs, made friends around the industry, and did the rounds. “I would go to the ad agencies and get called for auditions. Then she was offered a role by director Kaizad Gustad in the film ominously called Boom. She recounts with disarming honesty: “Meghna Reddy was meant to do it and she backed out. I remember I called Farrokh (Chothia) and I said, ‘Farrokh, I’m not really getting any work, and I don’t have much to speak of’. I still remember, he took the name of a famous actress and said, Even this person had to get around for a few months before really getting work, so you have to be a little patient. I mean, three months is not a lot’. That was his line, so I said okay.”    katrina kaif

Singapore sweep

I could never quite understand the attraction of 4D, the officially sanctioned version or the illegal HDB-hawked version. Having 'Big' and Small' versions of the same draw is thoroughly confusing to the uninitiated.
Neither seemed to give great returns and I can but wonder how they are faring with the two casinos mopping up all the Uncles and Aunties' spare change?
In all my time in Singapore I only managed to recoup a couple of dollars; mind you I was rarely tempted to out money down in the first place.  The Singapore Sweepstake lottery also failed to spark my interest with a maximum prize of 2.2. million and odds that made winning almost impossible.
Not that Singapore Pools established in 1968 and who run these lotteries are missing out, as Sport betting is big business. Both football and motor racing attract the punters.
Singapore Pools reportedly (dated 2006) make $5 billion Singapore dollars per year but are parsimonious when it comes to give back to charities.  In its first 38 years of operation is only gave back $S1.6.billion.

US to continue aid to Pakistan: spokesman

WASHINGTON: Notwithstanding strains in ties with Pakistan over the Osama issue, the US said it will continue to provide financial aid to Islamabad, pointing out that the country was still facing the scourge of terrorism.
"I think our view is that this (aid) has paid dividends and will continue to pay dividends. This is assistance that is in both Pakistan's long-term interest as well as the United States' national interests and security interests," State Department spokesman Mark Toner told reporters.
"We believe it is a vital cooperation. We have shared goals. We are both affected by scourge of extremism. The vast majority of al-Qaeda and bin Laden's victims were Muslim. Pakistan has suffered grievous losses from al-Qaeda attacks. So we believe that this is a shared struggle," he said. US to continue aid to Pakistan: spokesman

Vidya's double talk

MUMBAI: It's ironical to notice how some people love to contradict themselves. Something similar happened with Vidya Balan recently when she went to inaugurate a cosmetic surgery clinic.
Though the occasion demanded Vidya to talk about the fast catching trend of cosmetic treatments, the actress went ballistic with her gyan about internal beauty.
According to eye witnesses, "The organisers felt red faced for a moment when Vidya spoke about the fact that internal beauty is more important while inaugurating a cosmetic surgery clinic. It was completely out of place for her to mention something that went against the very concept of the gathering.

Book of Mormon leads with 14 Tony nominations

NEW YORK: "The Book of Mormon," a musical comedy skewering many classes of people, was nominated for 14 Tony Awards on Tuesday, potentially making it the most celebrated Broadway show since "The Producers" won 12 of 15 nominations in 2001.
The show from the creators of television's animated satire "South Park" and the previous Broadway hit "Avenue Q" has won critical acclaim and sold-out houses with the story of Mormon missionaries in Africa. It has skirted significant criticism about racial and religious insensitivity by virtue of its humor.
Tony Award winners Matthew Broderick and Anika Noni Rose, best known for her role in the Broadway production of "Caroline, or Change," announced the nominations at Lincoln Center.
The Tony Awards will take place at the Beacon Theater in New York on Sunday, June 12.
The nominees were selected by a 22-person nominating committee, while the award winners in 26 categories will be selected by 824 theater professionals.
"Mormon" was followed by "The Scottsboro Boys" with 12 nominations for the musical based on the 1930s case in which nine black men were unjustly accused of attacking two white women on a train in Alabama.

Mohsin defers resignation plans

LAHORE: Pakistan's chief selector, Mohsin Khan, has deferred a decision on whether or not he will resign and will instead meet the PCB on Thursday in an effort to resolve differences that arose after the selection of Pakistan's 15-man Test squad for the West Indies.
Khan cancelled a press conference he had scheduled for Wednesday following a series of releases from the PCB, the first of which said that any such press conference - without prior permission from the board - would be a violation of a code of conduct. A second statement was released shortly after, at the designated time of Khan's press conference, which said he had been asked to meet with the
board tomorrow in Lahore, where he can discuss any issues he might have about team selection.

Palestinians Sign Unity Deal in Cairo

The reconciliation deal aims to unify the rival Palestinian governments with an interim government leading to elections next year. After a brief, last minute delay, the ceremony got underway with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Hamas chief Khaled Meshaal and foreign dignitaries in attendance.
While the planned caretaker government has been described by Fatah officials as an independent body of technocrats, Meshaal struck a more political tone.
The Hamas leader told the gathering that "the black page of division" was behind them, and that the only real battle is with "the occupier"  -  a reference to Israel.
Israel has condemned the deal, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday saying it is "a tremendous blow to peace and a great victory for terrorism,"
Netanyahu has urged Abbas to choose "peace with Israel" over any deal with Hamas - considered a terrorist organization by Israel and the United States.
Hamas, which does not recognize Israel, is said to be willing to honor an unofficial truce.
But Meshaal's statement, as well as continued attacks from Gaza on Israel, are likely to undermine any Israeli confidence in that position.    Palestinians Sign Unity Deal in Cairo

Veggie bazaar

On my visit to Delray Beach, Florida to see my grandma, we struggled to find enough vegan-friendly restaurants and thus ended up frequenting a café called The Green Gourmet. The cute café was nestled in an upscale strip mall and seemed a little out of place next to heavily meat laden Italian restaurants. The primary focus of Green Gourmet is to offer fresh, healthy and delicious organic food. My grandma and I inquired which of the menu options were vegan and the man, who appeared to be the manager, answered that many of their dishes were vegan or could easily be made vegan. We opted to sit outside and enjoy the Florida sunshine. I was a bit surprised that the outside tables were covered in a fancy white tablecloth, but I guess this was reflective of the expensive menu items.
I decided to order a half order of the Organic Veggie Lasagna ($6) along with the Mashed Cauliflower side. My grandma wanted something simpler and chose the Veggie Burger.
The Organic Veggie Lasagna was very good. I had no idea it was possible to make such a delicious dish with just vegetables! Nevertheless, the vegetables were layered in a way that made me not even notice the dish lacked noodles. The vegetables were very well cooked and seasoned and the tomato sauce was sweet enough to contrast the savory spices. Each vegetable was soft but had a slight crispiness to it.

Kainaz Motivala

We've seen this pretty face before in Paathshaala and Wake Up Sid. Now, bright and radiant Kainaz Motivala   will soon be seen in Ragini MMS, a horror thriller which is a hybrid of fact and fiction.
The film releases in theatres on May 13 (yes, Friday the thirteenth). It will be released in two languages: Hindi and Telugu.
The young actress seems relaxed and is confident about her performance in the film. Excerpts:
You star in Ekta Kapoor's Ragini MMS. What is your character in the film?   I essay the role of Ragini. She is a simple south Mumbai girl in her early 20s, just out of college and has a boyfriend who she's been with for 8-9 months.
What's the film about?   It's a sensuous paranormal film, shot as if in real time. The film is about a young couple, Ragini and Uday (Raj Kumar Yadav), who go on a weekend trip to a friend's farmhouse, unaware that the house is rigged with secret cameras causing the reason for all the incidents.   How did you prepare for this role?   We had a very intensive workshop for a month. We wanted to keep the fear very real, so we indulged in a lot of improvisations. We heard the music from the film The Shining which is very spooky and also saw a lot of horror films.   How did you bag the lead role?   I auditioned for it. I was given two improvisational scenes to perform with a brief character sketch.  I was called again for a re-audition and I got selected.
We've seen you in two commercial films before:  Paathshaala and Wake Up Sid . But this one sounds like it's more hard-hitting. I am open to all kind of genres as long as the script excites me. I want to do more hard hitting films not necessary commercial.
You reportedly have a few love making scenes. Did they make you feel uncomfortable?  Yes, it is very uncomfortable to shoot such scenes. But once you realise that it's purely acting and not doing it as Kainaz but as the character (Ragini), its fine. I had a long discussion with my co-star Raj and he made me feel very comfortable.   Kainaz Motivala

Mothers day gift

Mothers Day will be next Sunday and it’s the day we honor our mothers for their love, nurturing and the sacrifices they make to help us have a happy, healthy and successful life. Mothers of the college-bound go above and beyond by providing their kids with encouragement, help and financial support throughout the college admissions process. Those moms need some tender love and care once their kids head off to college. Mothers Day is the perfect time to pamper those empty nest moms.
It’s all about redecoratingYou may not want this to happen, but your college departure ushers in the possibility of redecorating your room. As a sign that you embrace this change, get your Mom a book on interior design or home renovation. Encourage her to turn that room into a reading retreat, an exercise room, or a home office, encouraging her to start that business she has put on hold for the last 18 years.

Dale steyn girlfriend

Cast an eye over South Africa’s much-vaunted pace attack and guess which bowler is most likely to intimidate England’s batsmen over the next few weeks. There are a couple of behemoths in Morne Morkel, at 6ft 6in, and Andre Nel, two inches shorter but broad as a barn door, and Makhaya Ntini, not quite so tall, but powerfully muscular. Then there is Dale Steyn, slight and wiry, no midget at 6ft, but in the modern world of giant fast bowlers, he must feel like Gulliver in Brobdingnag.
“When we’re bowling, Morne will come over and put his arm on my head and lean on me like I’m a gatepost or something — the big guys give me a lot of stick,” Steyn said. “But somebody once said to me that dynamite comes in small packages. I’m happy to go with that.”
He may not look threatening, but Steyn is explosively quick and will be a real danger to English ribcages when the first npower Test begins at Lord’s on Thursday. From a low-slung action, he swings the ball late and has regularly been timed at around 95mph. After an annus mirabilis in which he has taken 78 wickets in his past 12 Tests, he is now ranked as the No 2 bowler in the world. Only Muttiah Muralitharan is above him.
But more troubling for England’s top order is that Steyn, 25, has a habit of hitting batsmen who fail to read his pace and trajectory. “I’m short, I’m skiddy and I’m quick, and I think that’s why I hit a lot of guys,” he said. “Batsmen don’t know whether to duck. And when they do duck, it can come through lower than they expect. That’s the beauty of being short.”   Dale steyn girlfriend

Ganguly Pune Warriors

Former cricketers feel Sourav Ganguly's vast experience will help Pune Warriors, who are struggling to stay afloat in the Indian Premier League, but caution that the former India and Kolkata Knight Riders captain won't have it easy living up to the hype.Ganguly, who went unsold in the January auction for the fourth edition, has replaced injured fast bowler Ashish Nehra for the remaining IPL. He will play under the captaincy of Yuvraj Singh.Warriors are languishing at the last position in the IPL with only two wins from their eight matches.Bengal's Ranji Trophy winning captain and former national selector Sambaran Banerjee described it as a "great news.""It's good to hear that he will be back in action. With his experience he will be asset.""Now everyone will look forward with much interest to the Kolkata Knight Riders and Pune Warriors clash. And I think Kolkata fans will be divided between the two teams.
A large chunk of people will root for the Pune side as Ganguly is still the darling of the people here.

The report also suggests a concerted effort to downgrade serious crimes in Police Commander Edwin Hosli's 8th District, which patrols the French Quarter, the beating heart of New Orleans' tourism industry. The NOPD issued a response late Monday that took issue with several findings of the report, including the downgrading allegation.Police Superintendent Ronal Serpas has said the report, dated in late March, convinced him to shift the traffic camera review work in-house, to the motorcycle unit.

Our treatment alternative has enabled many NHS Trusts to perform a very common operation virtually pain-free in a simple treatment room in around 30-40 minutes without a general anaesthetic or overnight stay,” said Michael Branagan-Harris, UK Managing Director for VNUS Medical Technologies UK Ltd. “This in turn has enabled hospitals to save money by freeing up expensive resources such as operating theatres, ward beds and staff for more invasive procedures.”

“It is clear that by freeing up hospital operating theatres and reducing both treatment and recovery times, this technique offers significant benefits for both the patient and the NHS,” said Mr. Brian Winn, Head of Technology & Product Innovation at the NHS National Innovation Centre.

“In my view the VNUS Closure® procedure is the preferred technique to treat venous reflux because it requires no special modifications to operating areas, is well tolerated by patients, requires minimal post-procedure analgesia and is highly effective at permanently closing the vein,” said Ian Franklin, Consultant Vascular Surgeon from Charing Cross NHS Hospital & Imperial College London. National skin centre

Africa's Malaria-Fighting Trees Threatened

The World Health Organization estimates 800,000 people die of malaria each year, most of them young children in Africa.
A new book by scientists at the World Agroforestry Centre, "Common Antimalarial Trees and Shrubs of East Africa," identifies 22 tree and shrub species that traditional healers in East Africa use to fight the disease.
But, the researchers say, they are being cut down for cooking fuel and other uses and could disappear before scientists have a chance to study them.
Herbal medicine
A person suffering from malaria in East Africa is likely to visit a local herbalist for treatment. Lead author Najma Dharani at the World Agroforestry Center in Kenya says the traditional healer may recommend the patient take a few grams of a plant known locally as knobwood.

Pope Benedict Declares John Paul 'Blessed'

People from all corners of the world prayed, sang hymns and waved their national flags.  Many were Polish who came in to honor their native son. Attending the ceremony were 90 official delegations and 16 heads of state.
Also among the crowd was French nun, Sister Marie-Simon Pierre, who says she was miraculously cured from Parkinson’s disease after praying to the late pope.
Pope Benedict pronounced the beatification formula and a large portrait of a smiling Pope John Paul II was unveiled, to the applause of the large crowd.

Those who took part in the ceremony spoke of the privilege they felt to be present and of how much the Polish pope meant to them.
"He was so loving and just open and warm, and just looking at this face in pictures makes me remember the love he had for everyone," said one pilgrim.
"He’s like the traveling pope who wanted to reach out to every person and every human being on earth," remarked another.
In his homily, Pope Benedict called his predecessor an exemplary son of Poland who, through his witness of faith, love and apostolic courage, accompanied by great human charisma, helped believers throughout the world not to be afraid to be called Christian.   Pope Benedict Declares John Paul 'Blessed'

Sony warns of almost 25 million extra user detail theft

On Monday, it had taken the Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) service offline after a security breach.
Sony said the user data issue related specifically to SOE and emerged as it was investigating the problem.
Last week, Sony admitted that the personal details of 77m Playstation users may have been stolen by hackers.
'Cyber-attacks'In a message to its customers, Sony said: "We had previously believed that SOE customer data had not been obtained in the cyber-attacks on the company."
However, it added that "on 1 May we concluded that SOE account information may have been stolen".
Sony was quoted by the Associated Press (AP) news agency as saying that the latest incident occurred on 16 and 17 April.
This was earlier than the larger Playstation user security breach.
Sony said that during the most recently discovered security breach, names, home addresses, e-mail addresses, dates of birth, phone numbers and gender information was taken.
Additionally, direct debit details of around 10,700 customers in Austria, Spain, the Netherlands and Germany were stolen, as were the credit or debit card details of some 12,700 non-US customers.

They didn’t think much of it first, but soon the news leaked that Obama would be announcing that U.S. Forces had killed Osama bin Laden, the terrorist that planned the attacks that killed their son. Jeffrey Collman was a 41-year-old flight attendant on American Airlines Flight 11, which was hijacked by al-Qaida terrorists and struck the north tower of the World Trade Center in New York on Sept. 11, 2001. The Collman’s think of their son every day, and Sunday night was no exception, of course. But the day stirred many emotions.
“The pain never goes away from 9-11,” Dwayne Collman said. “We were greatly relieved to see the news everybody was. I wish I could have been out in front of the White House. I was going to go out in front of the house and yell ‘U-S-A’.”   Twin Towers

Brothers and Sisters

The Walkers confronted their latest paternity/maternity scandals last night in "For Better or For Worse," with the requisite twists, turns and emotional turmoil.
Sarah made it quite clear that she doesn't want her real father, Brody, in her life. Or Nora's. This puts Sarah's widowed mother in a difficult situation, clearly.
We flash back to decades earlier, when Nora faced another difficult Brody situation. She broke the news to him that William Walker asked her to marry him.
She and Brody had powerful feelings for one another even then.

Meanwhile, the life of Justin Walker may not involve questions of paternity, but it is getting more and more complicated as he receives a blast from the past as well.  Brothers and Sisters

Brothers Rediscover Community Living on Recycled Bikes

Noah and Tim Hussin began peddling away from their big city lives last November and into the homes of Americans who are trying to rebuild sustainable local communities and economies.
After three years of living abroad, Noah wanted to come home and explore parts of the United States most people don’t know. Tim - an avid bike rider - has worked in multimedia journalism for years, and felt it was time to pursue a personal project with his brother.
They are now more than 1,600 kilometers from the east coast state of North Carolina, where they began their journey. Along the way, the brothers have met Americans who are living in eco-villages, on an urban farm and running sustainable businesses.
But photographer and filmmaker Tim Hussin says they are not just riding by. "You know, it's not like we are staying nearby in a hotel or something, and just, you know, visiting everyday or every other day. We are actually sleeping in their houses and eating breakfast with them. So, we have very much become a part of whatever we are documenting," Hussin said.
They are documenting their experience through film and photography, and a blog, which incorporates local music of the places they have visited.
Noah says their journey began at a member-owned bicycle shop in Asheville, North Carolina , where they made their bikes from recycled parts.  Brothers Rediscover Community Living on Recycled Bikes

Abundance of Digital Info Could Signal End of Newspapers

Andrew Rossi, who made the documentary "Page One: A Year Inside The New York Times," looks at the media and warns that the tsunami of digital information could spell the end of even the most respected newspapers.
"And particularly the threat is to traditional investigative reporting and journalism which takes place in institutions like The New York Times," says Rossi, who argues the dissemination of information online could threaten quality journalism. "I think that the idea of the democratization of information flow is really exciting. But there is also something to be said for a process that involves editors and writers and sort of the filtering of information in checking and in making sure that it's accurate. Something that the blogosphere doesn't always provide."
According to Rossi, free flowing news on the Internet has killed newspapers around the world and had an impact on the New York Times itself. The paper's circulation and revenues from ads are down.  Some journalists have been laid off. As a result, content can suffer.   Abundance of Digital Info Could Signal End of Newspapers

Business School Prize Promotes Global Water Strategies

About one billion people on earth do not have access to adequate or clean water supplies. More people die each year of water-borne illnesses, such as dysentery and cholera, than are killed in wars. To address this humanitarian and public health crisis, one of New York’s leading business schools conducted an international student competition on ways to bring clean water to some of the world’s most impoverished places.
The Hult International Business School teamed up with Water.org, a non-governmental advocacy group, to challenge the world’s business students to find a way of bringing clean water to 100 million people in the next five years.
Teams from six universities, out of more than 1000 that applied, reached the competition’s final round in New York City. The winning team, Britain’s Cambridge University, noted in its presentation that among those at the very bottom of the global economic pyramid - the world’s poorest populations - cell phones are more common than toilets.    Business School Prize Promotes Global Water Strategies

National Geographic Angry Bird

I often find myself searching my memory as far back as I can go for the spark that started me birding. I know where and when I started being a birder, that bit is easy. A warm summer morning in the late eighties, a fretful baby waiting for a hernia operation and a long calming walk in the hours when only the birdsong and milkman were company. We stopped on a small bridge over a stream, a Grey Heron stalked slowly downstream amongst the streamside vegetation, then a burst of iridescent blue tore along the watercourse and my first Kingfisher left me wanting more.

I go further back into the origins of my interest in birds, how I knew that a Kingfisher was a Kingfisher even though I hadn’t picked up a bird book for many years.  A schoolboy egg collection and a house near the sea, as well as a childhood that allowed me to become acquainted with almost every nook  and cranny for 4km in any direction. was perhaps no different to many of my peers.  National Geographic Angry Bird

Career point

This may come a quite a shock to some of you -- I'm a subscriber to The Sporting News. Yes, really I know it's hard to believe, but it's true. That brings me to the topic of this column.
In the April 25 edition of TSN, they compiled what they considered to be some of the greatest records in sports.
They range from Dimaggio's 56-game hitting streak to Pete Maravich's 44.2 points per game average in college.
It also features a few tidbits of information from former and current athletes and coaches that blend in with the recap of the records.
As a sports fan in general -- and someone who has the ability to speak his mind in this format -- I decided to offer my own thoughts on each of the top 10 records they listed and where they rank on my own list.
Here's TSN's version of the list from 10 to 1 with my own personal thoughts and where I think they should really be ranked:
10. Pete Maravich's 44.2 career points per game -- What the Pistol did was nothing short of amazing. Especially when you consider it was done without the benefit of the 3-point basket.   Career point
